Veterinary E-Prescribing Software

Veterinary E-Prescribing Software

Built by vets, for the realities of practice

Written prescriptions are still largely manual, often completed quickly between consultations or after hours, while navigating complex dose calculations, quantities and compliance details.

Petscribers is a pet prescription platform transforming how written prescriptions are created, shared and fulfilled.

Veterinary prescribing is complex, with huge variation across species, body weight, licensed products, and cascade considerations. Petscribers streamlines this process, reducing prescription creation time by up to 80% while embedding compliance and security safeguards, reducing time burdens on busy veterinary professionals.

Vets supported by Petscribers

Built by vets, Petscribers was created for the pressures vets are under every day: limited time, growing admin, rising client expectations, and rising prescription fraud.

Why this matters now

The veterinary prescribing process is under growing scrutiny.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigated the veterinary sector. One of their key concerns was that pet owners might be overpaying for medicines or prescriptions. The CMA focused on the need for transparency, affordability and accessibility, and the final report was published on 24th March 2026. Relating to medication the concluded:

  1. Mandatory disclosure to pet owners: Vets must inform owners that they can request a written prescription and clearly communicate that medications may be purchased more cheaply online, using both verbal explanations and written materials.
  2. Timely provision of prescriptions: Written prescriptions must be issued either in hard copy at the end of the consultation or digitally within 48 hours, with the option to send directly to the owner or a third-party pharmacy.
  3. Prescription fee caps: Fees for providing written prescriptions are capped at £21 for the first medicine and £12.50 for each additional medicine on the same prescription.
  4. Own-brand transparency: When prescribing own-brand medicines, vets must disclose this to owners, inform them of clinically equivalent alternatives, and highlight that these alternatives are available from third-party suppliers.
  5. Support for ongoing medication: For pets on ongoing medications, owners must receive additional information about requesting repeat prescriptions and the potential long-term savings of purchasing from third-party providers.
  6. Market infrastructure support: Measures include improving access to the authorised online pharmacy list and enabling price comparison tools to facilitate informed purchasing decisions.

Petscribers provides a secure e-prescribing solution to reduce prescription fraud and alleviate the operational pressures created by the CMA changes.

Against that backdrop, e-prescribing becomes more than a convenience. It is essential infrastructure for managing a more transparent, regulated, and operationally complex prescribing process.

How Petscribers e-Prescribing works

/0:24

1. Create the prescription

Key prescription fields are auto-populated using the information entered by the vet or vet support staff. The software supports automatic dose and quantity calculations, helping reduce repetitive manual work and lowering the risk of avoidable errors.

2. Standardise the output

The prescription is generated in a clear, consistent digital format. That means less variation, less ambiguity, and fewer avoidable back-and-forth queries later in the process.

3. Securely share and store

Prescriptions are instantly populated on the owner’s Petscribers dashboard and stored within a secure central repository designed to help reduce fraud and support safer fulfilment.

4. Support fulfilment

Pet owners can then use Petscribers price-comparison function to compare VMD-accredited online pharmacies and choose the one that works for them. That helps create a smoother path from prescribing to fulfilment, without adding further administration to the busy practice team.

What this means for vets

Save time on prescription writing

Petscribers reduces the time to create written prescriptions by up to 80%.  That means less time spent on repetitive admin and more time focused on delivering clinical care.

Reduce mental load

Manual prescribing asks vets to calculate doses, quantities and warning information while juggling busy consults. Petscribers is designed to reduce that cognitive burden with a more structured workflow.

Reduce errors

Guardrails reduce errors, making script rejection less likely and reducing the likelihood of additional delays in the process.

Improve consistency

Standardised digital prescriptions help reduce variation in script format, making them easier for pharmacies to process

Lower the risk of fraud

Clearer prescription outputs, secure storage, and a centralised repository to help reduce the risk of prescription fraud.

Support client trust through clarity

Owners are increasingly cost-conscious, and 39%  still do not know they can buy prescription medication online. Petscribers helps practices support informed choices of pet owners without compromising clinical care.

Currently, only 1 in 7 owners regularly buys online, despite cost being cited as a significant barrier to care.  With the CMA Provisional Decision Report calling for increased prescribing, we enable vets to support owners to purchase online safely.

Better for practices. Better for owners. Better for pharmacies.

Petscribers makes it easier for vets to prescribe, easier for owners to purchase, and easier for pharmacies to fulfil written prescriptions.

  • For vet practices, the benefit is efficiency: reduced time, less mental load, fewer errors, and a more scalable process.
  • For pet owners, the benefit is convenience: secure access to prescriptions and a simpler route to purchasing safe, authentic medication online.
  • For pharmacies, the benefit is consistency: standardised digital prescriptions that reduce follow-up and processing time.
